Updating the Theme
Keep your Label One theme up to date to get the latest features, security patches, and performance improvements.
Before You Update
Backup Your Current Theme
- Go to Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes
- Find your current theme
- Click Actions → Duplicate
- This creates a backup you can restore if needed
Never update your live theme without creating a backup first. If something goes wrong, you can quickly revert to the previous version.
How to Update
Method 1: From Shopify Theme Library (Recommended)
- Go to Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes
- Scroll down to Theme library
- If an update is available, you'll see an "Update available" badge
- Click Actions → Update
- Review the update notes
- Click Update theme
Method 2: Manual Update
- Download the latest version from your purchase source
- Go to Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes
- Click Add theme → Upload zip file
- Upload the new version
- Preview the new theme before publishing
- If everything looks good, click Publish
Theme updates preserve your customizations made through the Shopify customizer. However, any custom code changes will need to be reapplied.
After Updating
Test Your Store
- Browse key pages: Home, collections, product pages, cart
- Test checkout flow: Add items to cart and proceed through checkout
- Check mobile view: Verify responsive design works correctly
- Review customizations: Ensure your custom settings are still applied
- Test integrations: Verify apps and third-party integrations still work
If Issues Occur
If you encounter issues after updating:
- Clear browser cache and test again
- Check theme settings to ensure they're still configured correctly
- Review release notes for breaking changes
- Contact support if problems persist: [email protected]
- Revert to backup if necessary
Custom Code Considerations
If you have custom code added to your theme:
Before Updating
- Document all custom changes
- Save custom code snippets separately
- Screenshot theme settings for reference
- Note which files were modified
After Updating
- Reapply custom code to the new theme version
- Test thoroughly after each code addition
- Check for conflicts with new theme features
- Update code if new theme structure requires changes
Custom code modifications are not preserved during theme updates. Always document your changes and be prepared to reapply them after updating.
Update Frequency
When to Update
Update immediately for:
- Security patches
- Critical bug fixes
- Major feature releases
Update during low-traffic periods for:
- Minor improvements
- New features that aren't critical
- Performance optimizations
Schedule updates:
- Check for updates monthly
- Plan updates during off-peak hours
- Avoid updating during major sales events
Test theme updates on a duplicate/staging theme first. Once verified, schedule the update to your live theme during low-traffic hours (typically late at night or early morning).
